Quality control of chocolate raw ingredients and finished products by electronic noses

The Alpha MOS analytical instruments for sensory analysis of odor and taste are very useful tools to rapidly assess the quality of raw materials and help maintaining high quality and consistent production of chocolate products.

Cocoa beans are very complex raw ingredients used to make the chocolate liquor used in chocolate and for cocoa powder manufacturing. More than 500 flavor compounds have been identified from cocoa beans!

Residual solvent testing with an electronic nose

Pharmaceutical products can contain residual traces of the solvents that are used in the manufacture of drugs. The residual solvents are not completely removed by practical manufacturing techniques. Their content in pharmaceutical products should be evaluated and drug products should contain no higher levels of residual solvents than those recommended by health authorities, like the FDA. The Alpha MOS Fast Dual Gas Chromatograph Electronic Nose can be used for rapid residual solvent testing. The analysis offers a good separation of the compounds in less than 2 minutes. The system also shows a sensitivity which allows detecting concentrations as low as the thresholds defined by international regulations.

Stability testing with electronic tongues and noses
Automated stability testing with the Alpha MOS electronic sensing instruments provides important data on the effect of a variety of environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, and light conditions over a time period on product formulations or ingredients.

Cleaning in Place (CIP) testing

The CIP process is aimed at removing any residual substances in manufacturing facilities and equipment (tanks, vessels, pipework) in various processing industries such as the pharmaceutical area. The CIP efficiency is critical to the overall production quality and must meet strict regulations while minimizing downtime between product runs or product changeover.

Teledyne Tekmar Total Organic Carbon (TOC) analyzers have found wide acceptance in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry to assist in the validation cleaning procedures, especially clean-in-place (CIP). TOC concentration levels can be used to track the success of these cleaning procedures.
