Determining the surface energy of powders via washburn method
In this application note, the wettability of silica powder with various wetting liquids is assessed using a tensiometer of the DCAT series by DataPhysics Instruments and its corresponding software.

Measuring the surface tension of different molten granules using DataPhysics DCAT series
The tensiometer of the DCAT series with an electrical temperature control unit from DataPhysics Instruments is able to fast and easily determine the surface tension of molten granules in a temperature range of 80-150°C.

Measuring imaginary dynamic contact angles on dental implants using DataPhysics DCAT series
The tensiometers of the DCAT series with their dedicated software are able to determine imaginary contact angles reliably and reproducibly. This is a precious extension of the dynamic contact angle measurement method as it opens up the possibility to easily study hyperhydrophilic materials and, notably, to quantitatively distinguish the results also in cases where conventional methods always yield contact angles of 0°.

Measuring interfacial tension of insulating liquids against water using the Du Noüy ring method according to ASTM D971
The ASTM  D971 is a widely used standard method to examine the quality of insulating oil. Here, the application of ASTM D971 is presented using a tensiometer of the DCAT series from DataPhysics Instruments.

Effectiveness of surface treatment techniques for dental implants using imaginary dynamic contact angle measurements
To study ultra-hydrophilic surfaces, imaginary contact angle measurements have evolved into a powerful technique. Tensiometers of the DCAT series are the only measuring systems so far which feature a reliable and reproducible imaginary contact angle determination in their software. This method is presented on samples of UV and plasma treated dental implants.

Measuring dynamic contact angles on hydrophobic materials via tilting base method
The tilting based method is one of the most common techniques to observe dynamic wetting behaviour, which can provide advancing contact angle, receding contact angle and the contact angle hysteresis (CAH) in an easy and reliable procedure. In this application, the method will be presented using PTFE foils and metallic plates as samples.

Surface energy determination on thin wires using picolitre drops
The surface energies of a tinned and a pure copper wire were determined measuring contact angles with various liquids using the DataPhysics optical contact angle measuring and contour analysis system OCA 200 in combination with the picolitre dosing system PDDS.

This is the first issue of the DataPhysics company magazine Beyond the Surface. The focus topic of this issue is battery research.

DataPhysics: understanding interfaces
This brochure introduces DataPhysics Instruments, a company with strong merits in the field of surface and interfacial science.

Porometry
Porometry allows the determination of pore size distributions as well as gas and liquid permeability and bubble points of through-pore systems such as filters, membranes and papers.
