Neurons perfusion
Rhythmic motor behaviours, such as swimming, walking, and respiration, are generated by central pattern generators or CPGs. The Kiehn laboratory from the department of Neuroscience in the Karolinska Institute, Sweden, studies cellular and network properties of the locomotor CPG on neonatal rats. The spinal cord of neonatal rat is a robust in vitro preparation for combined electrophysiological recording and experimental manipulation of rhythmic locomotors activity.

Leaching tests of soils
The Swedish Geotechnical Institute, SGI, is a governmental agency whose laboratory performs examinations of water, soil and other solid materials for itself and external customers. SGI also conducts research to introduce and develop new examination methods and bases for new standards.

Endocrinology perifusion
In the Animal and Poultry Science Department of the University of Guelph, Canada, the research and teaching programs include: animal breeding, genetics, nutrition, physiology, growth and metabolism.

Electrophysiology of rat brain cells
To measure electrical signals and intracellular calcium concentrations of neuronal cells at the same time, Kwang-Hyun Cho, PhD, a postdoctoral researcher from the College of Medicine at the Catholic University of Korea, uses a microscope focusing on a perfusion chamber drained by a Minipuls 3. The neuronal cells come from a rat brain slice bathed in a buffer inside the chamber. This buffer is an oxygenated saline solution that ensures the viability of the neuronal cells, which are very sensitive to oxygen.

Biosensors research
The applications of piezoelectric biosensors are coming down to determination of viruses, bacterial and other cells, proteins nucleic acids and small molecules such as drugs, hormones and pesticides. The measuring setup for affinity studies mainly consists of a piezosensor, a driving computer, and a flow-through system.

Analysis of herbicides
Among the National Institute of Public Health in Prague, Czech Republic, one of the research departments focuses its studies on the analysis of pesticides in various matrices such as groundwater, wastewater, etc. These analyses are based on the extraction of polar herbicides from water samples.

Growing and harvesting of bacteria
understand the role of some genes in mutation rates and bacterial evolution, the INSERM Unit U571 of the Necker medical university in Paris, France, specialized in bacterial genetics, performs a competition application between wild type and genetically modified bacteria (E.Coli). These bacteria are cultivated on LB medium and exposed to stress from 3 days to one week and their growth is measured everyday by counting their colonies on Petri dishes.

Fermentation process
A Japanese company implanted wordwide, a major player in the food industry and one of the world leaders in lysine, theonine and tryptophane production, produces these amino acids with natural fermentation processes and sells them for animal feeding.

Extraction of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) from plasma using ISOLUTE SLE+ supported liquid extraction plates
This application note highlights the use of supported-liquid extraction to isolate three common NSAIDs, sulindac, flurbiprofen and ibuprofen, from human plasma. Supported-liquid extraction (SLE) is a 96-well sample preparation technique that is similar to traditional liquid-liquid extraction (LLE).

Extraction of 11-nor-9-carboxy-Δ9-tetrahydrocannanbinol from urine using ISOLUTE SLE+
This application note describes the extraction of THC and metabolites from urine using ISOLUTE SLE+ columns or plates.
